Summer Pet Care: Essential Tips for Keeping Your Animals Safe and Healthy
FOUR PAWS shares expert advice for pet owners during the hot summer months
Cape Town, 01 November 2024 – As temperatures rise, pet owners must take extra precautions to ensure their animals stay safe and comfortable during the hot summer months. Global animal welfare organisation FOUR PAWS offers essential summer pet care tips to help prevent heat-related issues and keep pets healthy in the warmer weather.
“Hot weather can be particularly challenging for pets, as they are more susceptible to heatstroke and dehydration,” says Fiona Miles, Director of FOUR PAWS South Africa. “It is crucial for pet owners to be aware of how heat affects their animals and to take proactive steps to ensure their wellbeing.”
Essential summer pet care tips:
- Keep your pets hydrated: Water is essential for animals during the summer. Make sure your pet always has access to fresh, cool water. “Dehydration is one of the biggest risks for pets in hot weather, and it can happen quickly,” explains Miles. “Owners should ensure water bowls are frequently refilled and placed in shaded areas.”
- Avoid exercising pets during peak heat: Walking dogs or engaging pets in physical activities should be done during the cooler parts of the day, either early in the morning or late in the evening. “Avoiding midday walks is key, as hot pavements can burn your pet’s paws, and intense heat can lead to heatstroke,” advises Miles.
- Provide shade and ventilation: Whether your pet is indoors or outside, ensure they have a cool, shaded place to rest. For animals that are kept outside, proper shelter is essential. “Never leave pets in a parked car, even for a few minutes,” warns Miles. “Temperatures inside vehicles can rise rapidly, leading to fatal heatstroke.”
- Watch for signs of heatstroke: Pets suffering from heatstroke may exhibit symptoms such as excessive panting, drooling, vomiting, or lethargy. “If you notice any of these signs, move your pet to a cool place immediately and seek veterinary assistance as soon as possible,” says Miles.
- Grooming for summer: Regular grooming can help keep pets cool, especially long-haired breeds. However, FOUR PAWS recommends consulting with a vet or professional groomer before trimming your pet’s coat, as some coats provide protection against sunburn.
- Parasite prevention: Warmer weather also brings an increase in fleas, ticks, and other parasites. “Ensure your pets are protected by using veterinarian-recommended parasite prevention products,” suggests Miles.
FOUR PAWS encourages pet owners to pay extra attention to their animals’ needs during the summer months. By following these simple yet effective tips, pet owners can help prevent heat-related issues and ensure a healthy, happy summer for their pets.
