Thanks to media pressure Romanian authority gives dogs back to FOUR PAWS

On 25 March 2014 the administration of the shelter Bragadiru near Bucharest returned to the international animal welfare organisation FOUR PAWS 17 of the 18 dogs abused and stolen by the authority for stray dogs management ASPA. Several members of the organisation waited for many hours in front of the shelter accompanied by media and reclaimed their dogs.

The dogs are extremely scared and some of them show traces of brute force on their bodies. One female dog is missing and nobody knows her whereabouts. Most of the other dogs from the vandalized shelter in which the FOUR PAWS clinic is situated were also returned. Eight of the dogs were killed because of the brutal methods of the dog catchers.

„We are relieved that we could rescue 17 of our dogs“, stresses Gabriel Paun, Director of Campaigns at FOUR PAWS. The ASPA had to give us the dogs back thanks to the media pressure they created. But who knows how many other dogs they abuse and kill somewhere else far away from people’s eyes.

On 21 March 2014, several dog catchers of ASPA abused and illegally took out from the FOUR PAWS veterinary clinic and the shelter in 6th District of Bucharest around 75 dogs and took them to the public shelter of Bragadiru. FOUR PAWS filed complaint to the police against ASPA.

What will happen to the abused dogs in the future?

The FOUR PAWS team transported 9 of the 17 dogs to the partner shelter  Speranta in Bucharest. The other 8 dogs who have been under the care of FOUR PAWS for neutering, were returned to their owners. We had to rescue the same dogs twice. Once from horrible conditions on the streets abused by criminals and once from the authorities. It is unbelievable what tortures they underwent in their short life. We hope that the 9 dogs in the shelter Speranta will be soon adopted by loving people. All dogs are castrated, chipped, vaccinated and are ready to be adopted as soon as they have completely recovered from the mistreatments.
